</div>Hi there, I know I have been away for a bit. I have been sewing lots, just not posting. Anyways... the other day I stumbled across this awesome blog <a href="http://www.juliabobbin.com/">http://www.juliabobbin.com/</a>, she has made a mad men challenge, where you make your favourite outfit seen on the show. I got so excited of course, as Mad Men and Joan especially are some of my personal obsessions too. The clothes are so pretty, the girls are so put together. I think I even prefer watching the show to eating chocolate, and that says a lot. <br />
<br />
<br />
So I am going to take up the challenge. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEithk0tsWS2sU2MovSGxPI9wy1wKYpX9jEHggqubb4Gu91yBNqEw_aNq5uVDOth0mlnuDz1t5lEkLxHKtGpFeq9r7CZ-00Mk6G1O21uiHdpKbBDZKV5yflMgYp1ePOnWqZ4JM2JSFwCNmqp/s1600/imagesCARVOCLD+-+Copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEithk0tsWS2sU2MovSGxPI9wy1wKYpX9jEHggqubb4Gu91yBNqEw_aNq5uVDOth0mlnuDz1t5lEkLxHKtGpFeq9r7CZ-00Mk6G1O21uiHdpKbBDZKV5yflMgYp1ePOnWqZ4JM2JSFwCNmqp/s1600/imagesCARVOCLD+-+Copy.jpg" yda="true" /></a></div><br />

</div>I actually want to make a lot of their dresses, however I will not have time to make them all before the challenge finishes. I am halfway through a dress based on Joan Siegel. I just love the colour, how it is fitted, and love the little tie at the front. I will reupdate when I have finished it :)kiwibubbleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355317518757951051noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8954711609496432104.post-40906968494534121842011-11-29T00:13:00.000-08:002011-11-29T00:13:12.073-08:00Blue moses dress<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>I took an extra day off this week and had a brainwave of a dress to make, This is a pattern I made up, straight on to the fabric. I wanted big sleeves. I was going to make it from a floaty material and cinch it in, but then decided stretchy fabric would be nice as it would stretch to fit my body without needing a belt. Plus this fabric was super cheap so I didn't care if it didn't work out :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPDhQJhHfCyDKlpXXPl_NaHYmMnb7ew3XA5McS555sx4QcdpQgyU5GHTwRrw0BkZyV3_zGUQRns8OnUzgcQQ-UDnGF7_-dLvz1ROeyfQ6MdUic6_w12GbOBYZQggGi4n2k6K6weHInthC4/s1600/work+party%252C+moses+dress+052.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dda="true" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPDhQJhHfCyDKlpXXPl_NaHYmMnb7ew3XA5McS555sx4QcdpQgyU5GHTwRrw0BkZyV3_zGUQRns8OnUzgcQQ-UDnGF7_-dLvz1ROeyfQ6MdUic6_w12GbOBYZQggGi4n2k6K6weHInthC4/s320/work+party%252C+moses+dress+052.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
I used the 2 way stretch lycra mix, it is really cheap from Kutwells in Christchurch. I like this fabric because it just stretches over everything so you don't need darts or zips, etc.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ7vHSfGIQA47iFBfdRynOlxhUAWKtN7X6nTirUXbZg8BGFsGYQSKIH96duYSi1p0RY0LuIW0QeaflS97lSjIIlffdBKVtupXRh_5SoTkS0elej4alIhtuGytI0XnX95SxJQTEkN7u36da/s1600/work+party%252C+moses+dress+054.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dda="true" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ7vHSfGIQA47iFBfdRynOlxhUAWKtN7X6nTirUXbZg8BGFsGYQSKIH96duYSi1p0RY0LuIW0QeaflS97lSjIIlffdBKVtupXRh_5SoTkS0elej4alIhtuGytI0XnX95SxJQTEkN7u36da/s320/work+party%252C+moses+dress+054.JPG" width="240" /></a></div> The other neat thing about this fabric is you don't have to finish the edges as it just rolls and doesn't fray. You can literally roll the length you like, I have rolled it to a demure length here.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIMlmwNYpMl5Fn9ja3850TMHQH7dkZDPqf-C3X1Odmi_ut8xBkSkwBOfTp9WoDYdYUbhJ3tkgNumPdeZClCnKnGEvVHigb1OAltyGtfYM46cJ-Ec1BnF_m8tLyImuoQRDrha5YcqMeilSo/s1600/work+party%252C+moses+dress+055.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dda="true" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIMlmwNYpMl5Fn9ja3850TMHQH7dkZDPqf-C3X1Odmi_ut8xBkSkwBOfTp9WoDYdYUbhJ3tkgNumPdeZClCnKnGEvVHigb1OAltyGtfYM46cJ-Ec1BnF_m8tLyImuoQRDrha5YcqMeilSo/s320/work+party%252C+moses+dress+055.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<br />
It has massive sleeves, reminds me of the seventies. But my flatmate told me it looked like I was making Moses' outfit, so that is why it is named this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJjSaiOv8WfL71SSvyE9Zm4uWL5wImHm_MYVTlaePIW0O99Acftt7bZnLpv7392ehCjECwo32h5pJGTRJDYJ375DvRRUmjylLGF_X8nOKGM1VkHr2_5pewwqc2N2ga_ms8idjPhVag0_2L/s1600/work+party%252C+moses+dress+057.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dda="true" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJjSaiOv8WfL71SSvyE9Zm4uWL5wImHm_MYVTlaePIW0O99Acftt7bZnLpv7392ehCjECwo32h5pJGTRJDYJ375DvRRUmjylLGF_X8nOKGM1VkHr2_5pewwqc2N2ga_ms8idjPhVag0_2L/s320/work+party%252C+moses+dress+057.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
I cut a circle out to make the neck hole (but cut it way big), this was an easy fic, just meant I had to pull down the centre front and ruche it by wrapping thread around it and this fixed it falling off my shoulders and made it more flattering cleavage wise, lol. Though I didn't finish the edges, I did finish the neckline by sewing some of the same fabric around the neckline like you do with bias tape. The nice thing about this fabric is you don't need to cut the tape on the bias a s it stretches in all directions, you just cut a strip in one direction and it fits.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbmM3KfBQ5i3KfQiJcpXwEwec5fmitKjac3QC51Hw1Rygcmp7wPfPqGhel3dq5MVPtMXnDFMX8SritEmh0Uwr37YY6GR9tMMUD2wxmU_9od_Krsm0HBgU_m-iFfucY7XqzjZYezSCeSyt7/s1600/work+party%252C+moses+dress+059.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dda="true" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbmM3KfBQ5i3KfQiJcpXwEwec5fmitKjac3QC51Hw1Rygcmp7wPfPqGhel3dq5MVPtMXnDFMX8SritEmh0Uwr37YY6GR9tMMUD2wxmU_9od_Krsm0HBgU_m-iFfucY7XqzjZYezSCeSyt7/s320/work+party%252C+moses+dress+059.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
If I want to I can wear it as a one shouldered dress just by popping my head through a sleeve and rolling in the neck line. The other sleeve then glamorously falls off the shoulder.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOsvuf_yE8PE-lUvxJVTucJFix99SnI-DN22AD7cZn7-amHX2zohVCCl9jgcCYGOXLMyyw2ITBAKhQxyK9YX28vQiWzZ2ladHFyC9db8sy4XsU_XXBoFSN2afNcPTarFvpMOZFOH9pY91B/s1600/work+party%252C+moses+dress+063.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dda="true" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOsvuf_yE8PE-lUvxJVTucJFix99SnI-DN22AD7cZn7-amHX2zohVCCl9jgcCYGOXLMyyw2ITBAKhQxyK9YX28vQiWzZ2ladHFyC9db8sy4XsU_XXBoFSN2afNcPTarFvpMOZFOH9pY91B/s320/work+party%252C+moses+dress+063.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I like it best with a belt and matching shoes as I always like to accentuate my waist, but this is what it looks like by itself :)<br />

<br />
The construction...<br />
The idea was the same as the circle skirt-fold a giant iece of fabric in four, cut out a neck hole (instead of a waist hole). I then laid one of my tops folded in half to work out roughly where the arms should go (but added on heaps as this is clingy fabric) <span id="goog_506139660"></span><span id="goog_506139661"></span>and pinned these basically falling straight to the floor, and moved the pins til it fit my body nicely. I then sewed wherever the pins are. The length was too long and so were the sleeves so I cut them. I have displayed the fabric layout so you can see where I sewed the seams. It is actually symmetrical, I just didn't take a good picture :)<br />
<br />

I bought this jersey for two dollars. It was giant and frumpy and high necked and long sleeved, but it was in good condition and I love the pattern. Tiny aqua diamonds on a black background. This totally fit with my polka dot type obsession. The fabric was a stretch knit-like a winter jumper.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
What I did to it...<br />
I cut the sleeves off down the seams.<br />
I grabbed a singlet that fits well and pinned it on and cut around it (except I made it was wider at the sides as this was not nearly as stretchy as a singlet). I did the same at the back, making it a racer back, than sewed the side seams together. I had the sleeves left over-and they have a lots of fabric in them. I cut the sleeves on the bias and sewed them together to make bias tape and used this to edge the neckline and the sleeves. Then I tried it on Anne and it fit beautifully. Great, I was halfway to my party dress!!<br />
<br />
Next I cut up a piece of black two way stretch fabric folded in four-to make one of my circle skirts. I overlocked the edges and pinned and sewed it to the skirt where I wanted it to sit. I had to be careful to use a stretch stitch as I didn't put a zip in and couldn't have it break where the waist seam joined.<br />
<br />
I had some aqua fabric in my stash, I cut long strips of this and sewed them end on end to each other then sewed them to make a giant long skinny loop and turned it inside out. I gather stitched it and pinned this gathered fabric on to the neckline where I liked, then hand stitched it down. I think its looks really pretty. This fabric has the same colour as the dots on the singlet piece. <br />
<br />

The dress now looked a little unbalanced, with the ruffle at the top and nothing of colour further down,. Plus the edge of the skirt kept rolling, so I made another long gathered tube of aqua and sewed it on to the bottom. <br />

I have always been inspired by bright colours and I like relatively simple clothes (plus I'm not skilled enough yet to do more complicated stuff). I thought my collection had a real sixties feel to it too. I love it. And now I have 5 new dresses in my closet :)<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>This dress was really simple to make, and I think it is one of the most effective. To make it, I made my block, cut out where I wanted my stripe, and then added on a new seam allowances to each piece I cut,. Then I simply made that offcentre piece in a different fabric. Tada, super easy!! <br />

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4Ga0PqznDNuBbgo49CoNR5dh4yAvg_7fPbmM8U5zNE3M6acHeYl1hISF8Z5BicjZztVPnD_Rds8c1P0-IgFdzG3bacVX2aj3IkCySxFu54S4psAba2ziPoT-4ja2md7xz7I3X49ZmhBbk/s1600/blog+and+dan+080.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4Ga0PqznDNuBbgo49CoNR5dh4yAvg_7fPbmM8U5zNE3M6acHeYl1hISF8Z5BicjZztVPnD_Rds8c1P0-IgFdzG3bacVX2aj3IkCySxFu54S4psAba2ziPoT-4ja2md7xz7I3X49ZmhBbk/s320/blog+and+dan+080.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
It was interesting making this dress, until now, I never really realised sewing needed much in the way of maths, but do make this dress, I pulled out the my ruler and made a graph! I taped up Anne with where I wanted the contours, and then had to make a table with coordinates of the lines of the curve, e.g. every two cms I measured where the curve was on the x and y axis and wrote down the coordinates (using the side seam and hem as the 0,0 axis). Geeky huh? I have no idea what real designers do when making clothes but it worked for me. Then I plotted these points on a graph and drew between the lines and this is how I made the curve for the pattern. Made that sound complicated? I was so proud of myself for working out a way though. This dress I designed with making the most of a woman's figure: The centre strip comes out at the bust and hips and curves in at the waist (to try and make the wearer lookk like she has a sexy hourglass figure, of course!)<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu9toMYkAUdniOIfsBmnxpTKp9fT8hswAaV4TwycG_u49pxObwYJ0DBkp7WlBHjOG8UjzfFRNACjaYhIQuNdHs2MZKSTK6qX7N8rzJkCtI9vzumYWLCxBjqGGSlf-QlTe-H3lTJCMnoG2w/s1600/blog+and+dan+082.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" qaa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu9toMYkAUdniOIfsBmnxpTKp9fT8hswAaV4TwycG_u49pxObwYJ0DBkp7WlBHjOG8UjzfFRNACjaYhIQuNdHs2MZKSTK6qX7N8rzJkCtI9vzumYWLCxBjqGGSlf-QlTe-H3lTJCMnoG2w/s320/blog+and+dan+082.JPG" width="240" /></a></div> I forgot when I was making this on Anne, that although I had set all her measurements to be the same as mine, she has a much longer torso( which I can't adjust as there is no dial there), so I probably should have curved the dress out for the hips a little higher up whan I made it (as it makes my chest area look huge).<br />

I made all my dresses from the same fabrics, just in different colours. I used these fabrics mainly as I had 10-12 metres each of the bright blue, purple and red left from when I bought them in a sale at new year for a dollar a metre. And I managed to find some hot pink in the same style. I really like colour blocking too. And since I have made these-colour blocking seems to be really in fashion, so that's handy.<br />

I had so much fun making this dress: mainly because I drew my picture, managed to make a pattern and sew it and it all came together perfectly first time. maybe I should do a tutorial some time on how to make a swirl dress as I just sort of made it up, and it worked.<br />

This is a bright blue and bright purple hoodie dress, the hood is lined in a stretchy blue/purple floral. <br />

I ruched it by gathering the fabric just under the neck with a hand stitch. next time I ruche, I will sew a piece of elastic to the back.<br />
<br />

I put the different colour in a pleat form to make the dress a little more intersting, I love how it turned out.<br />

It was called the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards aand is a nation wide competition and I entered 5 dresses. We were not allowed to take photos at the show, and I am still waiting for the professional shots to arrive from the photographer. In the mean time, until I can show you some photos off the catwalk, here are some images from one of the 5 dresses (I actually wore it today :) None of my outfits place anywhere but it was such a thrill to go to a fashion show and see my designs on display. There were 700 people in the audience on the night I went and the Fashion show has been on t.v. twice. It was really exciting for me to be a part of the show and has given me a lot of confidence with my designing-and thanks to Anne my mannequin for her help in being my figure to design and create the outfits off.<br />
<br />
<br />
So this is an outfit I entered in the Streetwear category.<br />

As you can see, it is 2 colours, hot pink and purple. It is stretchy, but that lovely thick stretch drill I love so much. I made a hood on it and lined it in the same fabric. The lining was a super stretchy synthetic with concentric circles all over it . I simply cut them and top stitched them on-whuch was a bit lazy as you can see the edges are unfinished and roll slightly. I was not sure how to finish them well but I think it will be fine as they will not unravel or anything.<br />

Oh and I'm wearing one of my button braclets and the colours worked very well together. The brightness of this outfit really uplifts my mood and it made me feel cute and playful.<br />

I sewed buttons all over a dress I made (which I still have to show you), and I have been having fun making bright button jewellery too. I was inspired by this beautiful funky bracelet my friend had, and I thought 'I can make that'. I bought approximately 500 buttons off Trade Me, all bright platic bright colours(they came in a bulk lot sale-I didn't buy them individually, haha) . I really wanted bright yellow giant buttons, and it had some, so I was happy.<br />
<br />
These are what I made.<br />
<br />
<br />
This is by far my favourite, it is all purple and blue, and each button has another button threaded on top.<br />

This is my least favourite, purple, green and yellow. Wearing these is a really easy way to brighten up a plain outfit, I have gotten a lot of positive comments when I wear them.<br />

My cute pink, red and yellow girly one. These are really easy to make. All you need is leftover buttons, elastic to thread them and ten or so minutes.<br />

I ran out of my good elastic when I made this one. It is best if it is stretchy, but not too stretchy, if you know what I mean. This is a really long one and I wear it wrapped around my wrist a few times.<br />

Luckily the hole was big enough where the waist band had been, that it fit well under my arm and over my shoulder. I then rehemmed where the waistband had been and took a dart from the shoulder so it would curve better over the shoulder. I rehemmed the waistband so I could make it in to a strap. I pinned a giant sleeve out of the giant top and sewed some seams in there as it is so billious and I wanted to be able to wear a belt with it. It took about an hour-if that. Then it was all done :)</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

<br />
The competition is on in 2 weeks and I am driving out of town to go and see it (it is a 7 hour drive to Gore). I am super excited, models are going to be wearing my stuff on a catwalk in a real life fashion show!!! I feel like i'm in my very own project runway. <br />

<br />
I had to design my own outfits and make them, as you know, for me, that's tricky as i haven't done much designing, usually I use patterns. However I did make a wearable dress in my purple one shouldered ruffle dress I designed from scratch, so I chose to give it a go. I used my mannequin and made the same block for all my dresses and then drew a pattern off this altering it for each dress. I can't show you all of the ones I entered in the show til after the show is finished-I made seven all up, but only entered 5. I entered three dresses as a mini collection, and two dresses wre entered in the streetwear category. I made them all using a 2 directional stretch drill-this elminated the need for zips and darts-haha, that's my kind of design!<br />
<br />
These are the least favourite of the seven I made-hence they didn't go in the competition.<br />

The others are UFO's now-unfinished sewing objects :) <br />
<br />
I made this dress in an afternoon before wearing it out to dinner with the girls. This fabric is a one way stretch cotton, it does not have too much give in it. It is not really an appropriate fabric for this pattern-it really needs a fabric that stretches in two directions for trying it on. However I really was too lazy to put in a zip, so I just cut it a half inch wider than the side seam allowances. This will make it two inches bigger overall around the body, and that was ok with me, as I would wear it with a belt to cinch the waist.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2HkGMJThbNnY3KYpXzovoJ4yAJPe4ZNCek5wrn51Rmwp9TYsCe47RslryrP2hx78zVbNsPy3mrWznEKD64Nf0kjRsoGWxjXgXMkYJFQqkBBSD0iQmDdv8jZbfMZz7rMBqJfvbmU9g_QwA/s1600/003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="154" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2HkGMJThbNnY3KYpXzovoJ4yAJPe4ZNCek5wrn51Rmwp9TYsCe47RslryrP2hx78zVbNsPy3mrWznEKD64Nf0kjRsoGWxjXgXMkYJFQqkBBSD0iQmDdv8jZbfMZz7rMBqJfvbmU9g_QwA/s320/003.JPG" /></a></div><br />
The pattern is black and white, but has a strong vertical element in the pattern, which I liked as it's slimming.<br />

Anne is modelling it with <br />
<br />
Black cardigan from The Warehouse<br />
Black belt that came with a dress I bought<br />
Hat from Ballantyne's<br />
<br />
I have never had a hat like this before, I have never really been sure what was flattering for my face before, but I love this one. I liked it so much I have made my own version since.<br />

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiHDZih_VB5fPaQumSIQisbT2ESBytiL4W3Rp80GhPRwoaMQ5IfmfHXWbIb7YC6GQdHuJO-_HgNUlHnPe7fPnltGLi-Z1UX6qIKPlYV8KIc1ksrt8F1T09RVdR_RlALRG_Wa-uNfYL-rS1/s1600/004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="161" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiHDZih_VB5fPaQumSIQisbT2ESBytiL4W3Rp80GhPRwoaMQ5IfmfHXWbIb7YC6GQdHuJO-_HgNUlHnPe7fPnltGLi-Z1UX6qIKPlYV8KIc1ksrt8F1T09RVdR_RlALRG_Wa-uNfYL-rS1/s320/004.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I made this one from a stretch drill I bought from Spotlight at the New Year Sale for a dollar a metre. I bought ten or so metres of it. It is a heavy fabric-so again, not too clingy, but not too stiff that I need a zip to get it on. Perfect!!!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcQDXLGodlfQjZPNwa5-qFShdph3fMVVbh-CM9yi8b3sGHF72iYQXfDLnvKXPIwP_QKq-jD6c04k0dfsKArn-XQ9wxiXdp5JkLYGBuvfVH8ZUhWZYhZ-TcaxSNGy2hOq39_vvrmQvu3dJN/s1600/006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="126" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcQDXLGodlfQjZPNwa5-qFShdph3fMVVbh-CM9yi8b3sGHF72iYQXfDLnvKXPIwP_QKq-jD6c04k0dfsKArn-XQ9wxiXdp5JkLYGBuvfVH8ZUhWZYhZ-TcaxSNGy2hOq39_vvrmQvu3dJN/s320/006.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I have actually been living in these dresses, they are really comfortable and I love how quick they are to make. They look neat with tights and boots. Sometimes I wear a long sleeve top beneath them too.kiwibubbleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355317518757951051noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8954711609496432104.post-59959656774947919612011-06-30T19:09:00.000-07:002011-06-30T19:09:35.802-07:00Stripey dress from tshirt dress patternAs I said previously, I made four of these dresses from vogue 8679.<br />
<br />
This time I used a super stretchy thick fabric that is heavy enough to retain its shape well. I loved the pretty colours and thought a vertical stripe would be slimming. The fabric is a synethetic with lots of spandex or something. I do not have clothes made from this fabric so I'm not sure what it's called or really what it gets used for.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhakmb2QGEAR2z2MHmzeGhDkWeN1-SVU4EpbF9YIH1XWsYl0FAKB2t5o4GEGSbDbX9LDNwpaJ1IZ-hMe1Q_beWFcrkWkimQMFaq7_d_3BheW3HamLf8z_YU82clfliXsBhirLQqTAhd3pcv/s1600/014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhakmb2QGEAR2z2MHmzeGhDkWeN1-SVU4EpbF9YIH1XWsYl0FAKB2t5o4GEGSbDbX9LDNwpaJ1IZ-hMe1Q_beWFcrkWkimQMFaq7_d_3BheW3HamLf8z_YU82clfliXsBhirLQqTAhd3pcv/s320/014.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
One thing I loved about this dress...I didn't have to hem the edges apart from the neck as the edges roll over. It is handy too as i can let it roll more to make the dress shorter or pull it down and have it longer.<br />
<br />
One thing I didn't like... cutting the fabric. It rolled when I was cutting it and I had to weigh it down, I used pretty coin sized glass beads that you put in vases to weigh it down. It was tricky to pin too as it just kept rolling back on itself.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfTQxG9upKBfOVlZYm8oNksG2piPUMO3IVioXU6sf7g78WcMXWg2MjW2c4byP_8nFQcSFhzAq_aUFS4onhF2lAfe62I0ecYm7Xr1zhYU7HpiddxXyy5vGpd7_4w5_9yHHKcXWSp8AUy62u/s1600/013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="182" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfTQxG9upKBfOVlZYm8oNksG2piPUMO3IVioXU6sf7g78WcMXWg2MjW2c4byP_8nFQcSFhzAq_aUFS4onhF2lAfe62I0ecYm7Xr1zhYU7HpiddxXyy5vGpd7_4w5_9yHHKcXWSp8AUy62u/s320/013.JPG" /></a></div><br />

Aqua cardigan from Glassons<br />
Yellow belt from an opshop (it cost me fifty cents!! )<br />
Yellow and white scarf from The Warehouse<br />
Aqua fake suede boots from The number one shoe warehouse<br />

<br />
It was perfect for me, it only takes 2-3 hours to make and there are no darts or zips, etc, how easy!!!<br />
<br />
Welcome to vogue 8679. I obviously made the dress view, I have not made the other pieces in the pattern. I bought the pattern on sale for four dollars from fabric vision.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRpI5ak2NwpwEJb81UeC1HpT2PldgEBybE1WhmRqXTTGpL1eBywQqv_36IUHexmnekxrLBwyQejQ5a-pd3rM4e3C9D92HNAkTmzXp5SuDONA7PL0UU2lXgirGaAs_yaZm7YzYBjkSPqjax/s1600/V8679.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="303" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRpI5ak2NwpwEJb81UeC1HpT2PldgEBybE1WhmRqXTTGpL1eBywQqv_36IUHexmnekxrLBwyQejQ5a-pd3rM4e3C9D92HNAkTmzXp5SuDONA7PL0UU2lXgirGaAs_yaZm7YzYBjkSPqjax/s320/V8679.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I loved it so much I made...4!!!! and I have another couple in the works too.<br />
<br />
First dress: made with a two way stretch synthetic. Not too stretchy though, so it still smoothes over the bumps rather than clinging to them :)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5P_r76fA1NceXIWjECG38D5xJUVaTE8PeKjdHO9qY9KU42hoIdqc2xjrhGclgnLrI8siKAm61Yea0joOVtjoGqnkNtNLEkgMvoMDzpi8qf-TqH02Hl6bdnCtWPqLR1WhwvWXTYttbLSZR/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="142" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5P_r76fA1NceXIWjECG38D5xJUVaTE8PeKjdHO9qY9KU42hoIdqc2xjrhGclgnLrI8siKAm61Yea0joOVtjoGqnkNtNLEkgMvoMDzpi8qf-TqH02Hl6bdnCtWPqLR1WhwvWXTYttbLSZR/s320/008.JPG" /></a></div><br />
My model Anne is wearing it for me as she is looking skinnier than me at the moment ; she has not been hibernating and eating bread and chocolate for winter unlike me :)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikfepmz8LwbsVvt5q4Pq5G-tXoEld-g1QESwHbPy803KRRcsjI9ogmpQCJq50E4eGE3iptpsaahgwNa-WtjCIJXAK36QnUodaKhAzWotTWYe6vpeHwPq-wraUFYhrep-5GysWdWpxjt1iI/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="118" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikfepmz8LwbsVvt5q4Pq5G-tXoEld-g1QESwHbPy803KRRcsjI9ogmpQCJq50E4eGE3iptpsaahgwNa-WtjCIJXAK36QnUodaKhAzWotTWYe6vpeHwPq-wraUFYhrep-5GysWdWpxjt1iI/s320/011.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Anne is wearing it with my black merino cardigan from the warehouse.<br />
Fake suede boots from the number one shoe warehouse<br />
Flower brooch from Equip.<br />
I wear tights with it too because it's winter and cold!(by my standards anyway)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdK_3npH6EtcX3F8G6TNaf7_4vrkQJv0AvSwdnB-9oYkhHBRTrWy5rDumZXB4t5GzYcemZr7M__QTgcAAxrDd56ckG-L2SeoBrC69RQNXhqaljEwo8rp4ZueY4AG81DMayFq7oy-xffngO/s1600/012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="138" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdK_3npH6EtcX3F8G6TNaf7_4vrkQJv0AvSwdnB-9oYkhHBRTrWy5rDumZXB4t5GzYcemZr7M__QTgcAAxrDd56ckG-L2SeoBrC69RQNXhqaljEwo8rp4ZueY4AG81DMayFq7oy-xffngO/s320/012.JPG" /></a></div> <br />
This dress turned out really well. Yay for streatch stitch on my sewing machine. The only problem I encountered was I had overlocked all the edges and when I turned over the hem, it caught through to the right side of the fabric. I just trimmed these bits and am ignoring them.kiwibubbleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355317518757951051noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8954711609496432104.post-9740103708579734702011-06-13T16:34:00.000-07:002011-06-13T16:34:06.510-07:00buttercup dress<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtJmIRNyPbnDIG_O3TeafEpO7ogGd0UP2FXqKEE6WU0FE_oaIAZFr3Ktby51zU0rAh5GZICl7-ae3_gXP3eTqosYRDxCV8CHeLeaH2u1uRYeEXjlx_TDsmxNLzJasIY76MjBRXqzwBLf7H/s1600/blog+stuff+064.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtJmIRNyPbnDIG_O3TeafEpO7ogGd0UP2FXqKEE6WU0FE_oaIAZFr3Ktby51zU0rAh5GZICl7-ae3_gXP3eTqosYRDxCV8CHeLeaH2u1uRYeEXjlx_TDsmxNLzJasIY76MjBRXqzwBLf7H/s320/blog+stuff+064.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
As promised, I made another dress using Burda 8072. I have actually been doing a lot of sewing recently, just not much posting.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhEn_lbtur6wO8tMElUJgj11Achdusdd29S5LwqWytaoTeaOqT-kH4XFqCHB_JlX5Vh01a9bUVh_vIirBvB0_kfPm1CnL7TXslm5NENirf-6XtscxeQveGkubuTc1ocXe5MghVc09AgOn5/s1600/blog+stuff+044.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhEn_lbtur6wO8tMElUJgj11Achdusdd29S5LwqWytaoTeaOqT-kH4XFqCHB_JlX5Vh01a9bUVh_vIirBvB0_kfPm1CnL7TXslm5NENirf-6XtscxeQveGkubuTc1ocXe5MghVc09AgOn5/s320/blog+stuff+044.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I changed things up a bit this time. I put a ruffle on the hem, this took me hours to do and I got really annoyed. But I like the result. In the image of Burda 8072, one of the dresses has a ruffle on it, but the pattern doesn't include one. I asked<br />
the most skilled sewer I know on the easiest way to make a ruffle,and it turned out great. If you want to see her work, it's at http://jwo-sews.blogspot.com<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiez4-j-e1PvarWyI8FHDV_LPkmJ_PSG_frVhbZPN54vknCUJgzf98pjslvl4RGNX-h6M2A_KpDdvSkuPoN0NFRUXN-jvAyjvIfWL2r-2COrc7ZiTEkJUnzJqtfDARxay7UsiuBGgOqYLMR/s1600/blog+stuff+045.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiez4-j-e1PvarWyI8FHDV_LPkmJ_PSG_frVhbZPN54vknCUJgzf98pjslvl4RGNX-h6M2A_KpDdvSkuPoN0NFRUXN-jvAyjvIfWL2r-2COrc7ZiTEkJUnzJqtfDARxay7UsiuBGgOqYLMR/s320/blog+stuff+045.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Instead of using the facings, I decided to line it instead. The images I took of this didn't show up well, so I didn't include them. But I found a bright yellow shiny fabric to line it with, and it turned out well. In the future I will probably use a thin cotton fabric for lining as slidy stuff is really tricky to sew darts in, etc, as it moves around heaps and I found it frustrating. <br />
<br />
I love how the difference in a fabric can make the same pattern look so different. This feels different to my 'dino dress'.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvIOcE3HPt9Ve0V0G_1RhbDWBDx2efb8JF8dV8hPeKnj3M2abdgBUgbhp0N7rzyAadXhvwZxDZJlhjddHITAmQ8fUH9r11HdKnyVb7fChZfmpH0WReIWYkZBbfW_5Bwpggj3_UfDulwU6H/s1600/blog+stuff+051.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="320" width="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvIOcE3HPt9Ve0V0G_1RhbDWBDx2efb8JF8dV8hPeKnj3M2abdgBUgbhp0N7rzyAadXhvwZxDZJlhjddHITAmQ8fUH9r11HdKnyVb7fChZfmpH0WReIWYkZBbfW_5Bwpggj3_UfDulwU6H/s320/blog+stuff+051.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I will wear it with my fake pearls most likely. <br />
<br />

<br />
Burda 8072<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW5YZ4xRiTO3T4tGdi8Og2qwxfi-ca2bMt3ApWiuD697fCwwS2i0jNltj5eDQkTaS0oHPEdtuBrF3nyePkcfMLVql5j0x_2kWQ2jBL3VI7faG2kvRfZys8SEOXOKz9naZhWxcdqUk5cBHf/s1600/Burda8072.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="243" width="207" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW5YZ4xRiTO3T4tGdi8Og2qwxfi-ca2bMt3ApWiuD697fCwwS2i0jNltj5eDQkTaS0oHPEdtuBrF3nyePkcfMLVql5j0x_2kWQ2jBL3VI7faG2kvRfZys8SEOXOKz9naZhWxcdqUk5cBHf/s320/Burda8072.jpg" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I do have to wonder, who is this pattern marketed at? It is beige, and on an older model, yet it is a really 60's youthful looking pattern. Doesn't the silhouette remind you of something Mary Quant would make or Twiggy would wear back in the sixties?<br />
<br />
Anyhow, it was a really simple pattern and super quick to make, so I loved it. I made the dress from a craft cotton (bought on sale of course). I made the non-pleat version as I like things simple.<br />
<br />
Oooh, and I just want to say, if I was a dinosaur, I would definitely want scales like the pattern on this dress :)<br />
<br />

This is it plain. A little boring I think. I am wearing the matching belt, but it's hard to see. I am also not sure if I want to accentuate my hips by wearing a belt there, I prefer belts high on my waist as on the waist gives me a better silhouette.<br />

I enjoyed this pattern so much, I made another one straightaway-I will put it up soon :)kiwibubbleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355317518757951051noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8954711609496432104.post-52720997262706484612011-05-23T00:33:00.000-07:002011-05-23T00:33:08.571-07:00Purple beretDo you ever want something and just can't find it in stores? For years I have wanted the perfect shade of red beret. I ended up finding one last year, but it's an orange red, not a blue red. Well I was thinking to myself the other day, I wonder if I can make one? Well, yes, it turns out I could. It takes about 20 minutes to prepare, and 20 minutes to sew. Easy!!!! <br />
<br />
<br />
I know this isn't my perfect red colour I was dreaming about, but I am also purple- obsessed at the moment, so made this one first :) I made it from a heavy stretch cotton drill, the same fabric I used in my one shouldered purple dress.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib1wnKFrSDim4QZZcbwbh_Zvay44OngbybeLDONC8TtdYV18kbUKORPag-yXykc6az0RvS1Exbw4Bnj0YU52qNA8L1wb-aZg0EYq50Mf6_enH0GI54qhTYzu6o0vMBpeniU0PbDR1Be-5z/s1600/blog+stuff+018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="291" width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib1wnKFrSDim4QZZcbwbh_Zvay44OngbybeLDONC8TtdYV18kbUKORPag-yXykc6az0RvS1Exbw4Bnj0YU52qNA8L1wb-aZg0EYq50Mf6_enH0GI54qhTYzu6o0vMBpeniU0PbDR1Be-5z/s320/blog+stuff+018.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
So if you want to make one yourself, I recommend using this tutorial. It is very straightforward and easy. On her blog, Vively makes a reversible one which is really cute. Mine is a classic one sided beret, I just doubled the band around the head to get a nice finish instead. I can't get my link button to work, but you can find the tutorial I used at....<br />

Now bring on winter, so I can feel glamorous in all the multitude of berets I am bound to make :)kiwibubbleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355317518757951051noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8954711609496432104.post-72706921857566361322011-05-23T00:06:00.000-07:002011-05-23T00:06:40.127-07:00Thrift store finds!!I just have to show you all the stuff you can get at thrift stores, and the huge savings you can make by buying sewing notions. Isn't it handy when, for example, you need a zip, and you have dozens in different colours and lengths already in your stash? I normally pay $3.50 at my fabric store for a zip, so I was excited!!! It also means, by having a range of stuff at home, I am less likely to need to pop out to the fabric shop. That is good, as sometimes I am busy, and sometimes I am lazy :)<br />
<br />
I spent $7 in total, and I scored all of this...<br />
<br />
Eleven zips, of varying colours and lengths, still in their packets.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEEcQ9r9HBxbL9ogV_tOc7UGg0mFekC4BQb1983j2emE8L9DSSe-638NjFaTPzy4axMnfY9Gl5U65Bch137jzP7m3JSBo1HXY7m2xnZdjn4pZNVmQ3xV_1qd-8I-SsNfqbNv4If8D2kmw6/s1600/blog+stuff+010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="240" width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEEcQ9r9HBxbL9ogV_tOc7UGg0mFekC4BQb1983j2emE8L9DSSe-638NjFaTPzy4axMnfY9Gl5U65Bch137jzP7m3JSBo1HXY7m2xnZdjn4pZNVmQ3xV_1qd-8I-SsNfqbNv4If8D2kmw6/s320/blog+stuff+010.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Eleven retro patterns, a few are for me, and I bought a bunch of kids ones too. I know a lot of people who are having babies, and I figure I can use all the offcuts from my dresses to make kids clothes, as they won't need much fabric.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8d1-Z3zldedC55CjJOzkKs8pTPuKBf4zm3QiQEa1kAv1EfkwGl78KI914O_hGbc9TrcXKxPpR9icl8I6oai8ds_qoQ9b4OtCgDy-DbX6pLY3JBLjShyphenhyphenNZxCvgcBZ8uY-yzi3ro54qHTQC/s1600/blog+stuff+011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="240" width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8d1-Z3zldedC55CjJOzkKs8pTPuKBf4zm3QiQEa1kAv1EfkwGl78KI914O_hGbc9TrcXKxPpR9icl8I6oai8ds_qoQ9b4OtCgDy-DbX6pLY3JBLjShyphenhyphenNZxCvgcBZ8uY-yzi3ro54qHTQC/s320/blog+stuff+011.JPG" /></a></div><br />
A bunch of belt buckles, overall clasps and a bright yellow belt. I wear the belt all the time, it fits perfecty around my waist. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOOegmXGj6N0TBxEtYa5qqT6YtZSIpoYWUCgHEIS57OkKcgS-ziS1Q2Y379nIW_V2ra_Go0cfa2lkGxXMoEF4wWmtS5d9U4RnWIoD4FAFiJzq4SzGxMWhi2y8GYGKBgD58KqMrO1CiSbb1/s1600/blog+stuff+012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="240" width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOOegmXGj6N0TBxEtYa5qqT6YtZSIpoYWUCgHEIS57OkKcgS-ziS1Q2Y379nIW_V2ra_Go0cfa2lkGxXMoEF4wWmtS5d9U4RnWIoD4FAFiJzq4SzGxMWhi2y8GYGKBgD58KqMrO1CiSbb1/s320/blog+stuff+012.JPG" /></a></div><br />
<br />
This stuff has already come in handy, I wear the belt heaps and I have used one of the zips. I also made a belt using one of the buckles, to match a dress I made-shame I lost the belt on the first day wearing it. Haha. :)<br />
<br />
Do you buy notions at thrift stores too? I have gone off buying thread there as I find it breaks too easily. What else do you buy at thrift stores?kiwibubbleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355317518757951051noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8954711609496432104.post-45672126744690912862011-05-22T23:50:00.000-07:002011-05-22T23:50:06.840-07:00Hello kitty mini bloomersIt was my friend's birthday the other day. <br />
So after how easy and fun it was to make my red plaid dress the other day, I couldn't resist making another.<br />
<br />
I also found this fabric in Invercargill on my road trip. It was in the furnishings section, and yes, it is curtain fabric! But because it was so beautiful, i had to have it!! It doesn't have thermal backing, that would be too stiff for a dress, but it is still quite scratchy, so I fully lined it with some soft cream cotton. This fabric is quite shiny too. To line it, I just cut the pattern exactly the same from the cream fabric and didn't cut any facing, then I just sewed the right sides together and it was done!! I made it all in a few hours, so it was really easy and I love it.<br />
<br />
<br />
Today I will show you how to wear a dress such as this three ways: with a vintage look, formal wedding outfit and casual work friday<br />

Which is your favourite look? <br />
<br />
<br />
I think this colour dress would look great with tan/camel accessories too, but I am just not a fan of camel tones, so I don't own any. I know it's the 'in colour' this season, but it just doesn't appeal to me. I love bright colours instead, and having a brown dress is enough out of my comfort zone. Hahaha. In saying that, camel does look lovely on some people and it always gives an outfit a timeless classic stylish look, don't you think? <br />
<br />
Which colour would you put with this dress? How would you wear it?kiwibubbleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355317518757951051noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8954711609496432104.post-100358023301118162011-05-11T00:40:00.000-07:002011-05-11T00:40:01.125-07:00Inspiration for my new dressWhat do you get when you mix this... chocolate swirls.<br />

And this... the outfits the family wore in 'The sound of music'.<br />
<br />
And the 'make do and mend' idea from the second world war-where people couldn't access new material, so they made new outfits from furnishings, etc.<br />
<br />
That's right, you get a chocolate swirl dress!!!<br />
<br />
In the next upload, I will show you how I style it :)<br />

This is actually the first time I have used a vintage pattern, even though I have dozens in my stash.<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
It is Style 4287, from 1973. It had never even been cut out before!!! How exciting! I was concerned as it is a size 12.5, and I am a couple of sizes bigger than that, but I have also read that vintage patterns are made big and I like my clothes more fitted, so I made it anyway-and I actually had to take it in a bit!!!! I also have to say, they made patterns well back then, the pattern paper was good quality, and had not faded or deteriorated at all.<br />
<br />

I bought the fabric from Spotlight on a road trip through Invercargill. It was a 'christmas fabric', so was quite discounted. I paid about four dollars a metre. Do you think it looks too christmasy? It is a craft cotton, I love the weight of these fabrics. I tried to match the plaid, but it was tricky and didn't really work, I think it was difficult as there are so many seams. It doesn't matter to me, I will wear it anyway.<br />
